Rock Church and Cottage of Sts Andrew and Procopius

The Monopoli hinterland hides one of the most interesting rock settlements in the area. The site was in all likelihood very densely populated, given its size as well as the numerous structures still visible today: numerous caves used as dwellings, stables, underground oil mills, warehouses. The farmhouse, dating back to around 1000 AD, stands on both sides of the blade, known as the 'Assunta', after the district it crosses. Also interesting are the rainwater collection systems, still visible today, as well as the typical calendars of the period, carved into the rock in order to mark the time of oil maturation. Inside the complex, under cool, centuries-old olive trees, is one of Monopoli's most beautiful rock-hewn churches, which certainly deserves more attention from the authorities in charge. The church is known as the crypt of St. Procopius, although the more complete indication is crypt of Sts. Andrew and Procopius, as can also be deduced from the Latin inscription, carved into the rock, on the central entrance triforium. The interior is divided into naos and bema by a lithoid iconostasis. Among the characteristics of the place of worship is the double apse. The church is entirely frescoed, although most of the frescoes are undergoing a slow and inexorable decay. Among the frescoes, which can be dated to between the 11th and 14th century, are recognisable: St. George on horseback, spread in a crusader environment, a saint. An anonymous bishop of whom only fragments are visible, St. Anthony in fragments recognisable by the presence of the bell, St. Eligius, St. Doctors, the Annunciation, the Trinity, the Enthroned Virgin, St. Leonard, Sts. Peter and Paul and others. The farmhouse was located in the vicinity of the ancient Via Traiana in such a way as to be connected to the rest of civilisation, but at the same time it was invisible to enemy eyes as it was located below the ground level, being in a blade. The choice of place, therefore, was not random at a time when political instability was the order of the day.
