Our Lady of Relief rock church
The church once overlooked the canal port, which was silted up by the Normans for safety reasons.
At the entrance is a sculptural group by Stefano da Putignano, dating back to the 16th century, which originally belonged to the church of S. Maria la Nova, destroyed during the siege by the Duke of Vasto (1529).
After a flight of steps, a quadrangular room can be seen inside, separated by a naos and a sacred bema on the right, by a stone septum, known as the triforium, which consists of two pillars and round arches.
The place of worship, located near the ancient centre, is counted among the rupestrian churches with two apses, structures that are very common in the area. There is a fresco of the Virgin and Child possibly from the 13th century. The entire environment, very popular in the Marian month, has recently undergone restoration and renovation work.
