Chiassi
In the past, they were alleys, later blinded by the construction of houses. Closed on three sides with a common courtyard overlooking the main street, their function was purely defensive, but they also served a gathering purpose: activities, festivals and rituals were held.
Today, the historical centre of Monopoli is full of these kiassi, located in the smallest and most hidden spots, they show off their plants and flower boxes. They represent a labyrinth of beauty and wonder of the mediaeval town; some are permanently inhabited, others are occupied by accommodation facilities that have sprung up in recent years.
