There are so many opportunities that Monopoli offers to let us discover its historical soul, visitors can enjoy another important and significant experience: a visit to the air-raid shelters of Vittorio Emanuele Square.

Beyond a slab placed in the ground bearing Article 11 of the Constitution: 'Italy repudiates war' - below street level - is a maze of tunnels in which one is in danger of getting lost. Three hundred metres, running through the large square in the centre, forming an X. An air-raid shelter during the Second World War, considered one of the largest in Apulia: it could accommodate up to 1,800 people.
